Renaming Your Digital Photographs

When you take a picture with your digital camera, the camera creates a filename for the image. The filename contains a prefix determined by the camera manufacturer, followed by a number. Unfortunately, the filename doesn't give you a clue about the image. You can use the File Browser to rename every digital image you own. For example, if you have a folder filled with JPEG images from your vacation to Disneyland, you can rename the files: Disney01.jpg, Disney02.jpg, and so on.

  1. Launch Photoshop Elements and open the File Browser.
  2. Navigate to the folder that contains the files you want to rename.
  3. Select the files you want to rename by clicking their thumbnails. You can select contiguous files by SHIFT-clicking the first and last thumbnails of the files you want to rename, or you can select noncontiguous files by CTRL-clicking (Windows) or COMMAND-clicking (Macintosh) each file you want to select.
  4. Click the More button in the upper-right corner of the File Browser, and from the drop-down menu choose Batch Rename to open the Batch Rename dialog box shown next.

  5. Accept the default option of storing renamed files in the same folder. Alternatively, you can click the Move to New Folder radio button, which enables the Browse button. Click the Browse button and then navigate to the folder where you want the renamed files stored.
  6. Select the default naming option (Document Name) and type the name you want to replace it. For example, if you're renaming pictures of your wife, type your wife's first name.
  7. Click the down arrow to the right of the next field and choose one of the following: 1 Digit Serial Number, 2 Digit Serial Number, 3 Digit Serial Number, or 4 Digit Serial number. There are other options available, but serial number is the logical choice when you're renaming several images and giving them the same name. After you choose your options, the example text updates to show you what the filename will look like after you rename the files.
  8. By default, the File Browser renames the files so they're compatible with your operating system. If you're sharing the files with other people who own computers with different operating systems, choose one or both of the remaining options.
  9. Click OK to rename the selected files.

Removing Red-Eye from Your Digital Photos

If your digital camera does not have a red-eye reduction mode, when you take flash pictures of people, the flash reflects off their retinas and produces a red glow in each eye. You can easily correct this problem in Photoshop Elements and return the person's eyes to normal.

  1. Open the image of a subject that has red-eye.
  2. Zoom in on the subject's eyes, as shown next.

  3. Select the Red Eye brush tool.

  4. Position your cursor over the subject's eye and press the left bracket ([) key to reduce the size of the brush or the right bracket (]) key to increase the size of the brush. The brush size should be slightly smaller than the pupil of the subject's eye.
  5. Click and drag the tool over each eye. You may have to take a couple of swipes to remove all of the red-eye. The following image shows the subject's eyes after using the Red Eye tool.

Put Together a Digital Photo Slideshow

Photoshop Album is a popular, inexpensive software package that amateur photographers use to manage, print, and share their digital photos. The program provides one-stop shopping for the most popular photo management functions - everything from storing photos to emailing them. Photoshop Album even links to a selection of editing software packages, such as Adobe Photoshop, that you might have installed on your computer, and then allows you to click once on a picture and launch the editing package with the picture preloaded.

The Slideshow Creation Wizard in Photoshop Album enables you to easily create a digital slideshow of your photos. Follow these steps to make your own digital photo slideshow:

1. Choose Slideshow --> Creations --> Album to display the Slideshow Creation Wizard.

The slideshow menu button is located on the tool menu below the menu bar at the top of the screen.

You can include video clips in a slideshow. The video prints the first frame of the video if you choose to print the slideshow on paper.

2. Select the slideshow style you want to create and click Next.

Photoshop Album comes with a number of attractive slideshow types. Click each style to view the example on the right-hand side to make your decision.

3. Choose the layout of your slideshow in Step 3 of the wizard and then click Next.

Enter the following information, as shown in Figure 1:

• Type the information you want to appear on the title and subsequent pages of your slideshow.

• Select the number of slides to show per page and whether you want captions to show.

• Select any music and transition options you desire.

The Transition options are the type of dissolve, fade, or other effect you want to use to move from one slide to the next. You can attach any music file on your computer (for example, a track downloaded as an MP3 file or taken from your favorite CD).

4. Select the photos you want to include in your slideshow and arrange them in the proper order, and click Next.

5. Preview your slideshow; keep clicking Next until you reach the end of the preview.

6. Choose the format in which you want to publish your slideshow.

The Output Options are:

• Save as PDF: Creates an Adobe Acrobat Reader eBook or PDF file.

• Print: Prints a hardcopy of your slideshow.

• Email: Creates a PDF file and sends your slideshow to someone by email.

• Burn: Burns a CD-ROM or DVD of your slideshow that plays on a DVD player attached to a TV.

• Both DVD and video CDs are viewable on a standard DVD player hooked up to a TV set. In most cases, a standard video CD is just as good as a DVD (although with less space) and you can make one on a CD burner even it you don't have DVD burning capability.

• Order Online: Orders a printed version from an online printing service.

7. After you publish your slideshow, click Done.
